Fife’s Kaleb McGary was hopeful. But he was also realistic.
That is why when friends and family gathered at the house in town Thursday night for the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, there was an understood next-night contingency plan in place – just in case.
Well, that wasn’t needed, because late Thursday, McGary got the call he was waiting to hear – from Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, who informed him the team was moving up to select the big right tackle with the 31st overall pick.
“What an amazing thing that has happened for this young man,” Fife football coach Kent Nevin said. “He is thankful. He knows he gets to do something special for his family, and that was his No. 1 goal.”
What Atlanta is getting is much-needed help along the offensive line, not only to protect quarterback Matt Ryan, who was sacked 42 times last season, but to get its running game going.
The Falcons also selected Boston College center Chris Lindstrom with their 14th pick.
“This is a (team) that previously had a reputation of being soft along the offensive line,” said NFL Draft analyst Rob Rang. “McGary is gritty and physical, and should be ready to play immediately, if needed.”
The Huskies have now had players selected in the first round for three consecutive years – and in five of the past seven years.
McGary also became the first offensive lineman from the UW selected in the first round since Lincoln Kennedy went ninth overall to Atlanta in 1993.
